Wilmington Public Library: Celebrating Black History Month

Wilmington Public Library is celebrating Black History Month with their "Voices of Power" speaker series.  They kicked off the month with poet, writer, activist and educator Nikki Giovanni which included special poetry readings by Delaware Poet Laureates: The Twin Poets and Derin Felder along with a performance by the Wilmington Children’s Chorus. 

Additionally, the Library hosted a special “lunch and learn” event with the son of political activist Marcus Garvey, Dr. Julius Garvey in partnership with the Center for Global Africa and Culture Restoration Project.  

On February 9th, they will hosted NBA player, Mahmoud Abdul Rauf as he shares his story of converting to Islam during his basketball career.  The Library’s February 15th event will feature actress, singer and director who is also the dean of the College of Fine Arts at Howard University, Phylicia Rashad.  Last but not least, February 23rd will celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip hop with legendary rapper and record producer Slick Rick.
