Kumba Academy is one of several quality schools we have in our Downtown Wilmington neighborhood. Kumba Academy focuses on providing an innovative learning experience and developing a true love of learning.

Some of our Downtown Visions team joined me today in a tour of Kumba Academy's new home on French street - we also brought along one of their projects from their former home on Market Street.

I am really impressed with all that Head of School Sally Maldonado, M. Ed and her staff are doing to inspire and educate our next generation of leaders.

Learn more about our history this Saturday

The city of Wilmington has played a crucial role in helping individuals escape the bonds of slavery.

This Saturday, everyone is invited to hear from Dr. James E. Newton, Professor Emeritus of Black American Studies, UD, as he talks about Delaware's role in the Underground Railroad.

The talk is scheduled for 2:00 at the Wilmington Friends Meeting House - 401 N. West Street.

Innovation Week

Downtown Wilmington is home to a growing number of great tech companies and start ups - and starting this Friday, you'll have a chance to experience more than a week of exciting events centered around that technology.

Delaware Innovation Week presented by 1313 Innovation and organized by Technical.ly Delaware is a week-long celebration of technology and innovation, taking place November 13-21, 2015. 

Whether you would like to explore creativity, education, media, business development, and/or the impact of technology on government and civil society, then there's going to be events for you to attend and in which you can participate.

Thanking our Veterans

This Wednesday is Veterans Day - a day to honor the men and women who have served our country with honor.

I encourage everyone to come out for an evening of great entertainment and to offer whatever you can for the admission, which goes to support the Wounded Warrior Project.

Downtown's opportunity to make a difference

I am proud of how generous and caring the people of Downtown Wilmington are.

This week, we get the opportunity to once again partner with our friends at the Food Bank of Delaware and Dart First State to provide food for people in our community.

The Dart Bus will be parked at Rodney Square and accepting donated food items on Thursday, Nov. 12, from 7:00 am until 5:00 pm and on Friday, Nov. 13, from 7:00 am until 1:00 pm.

The Food Bank of Delaware says they are happy to accept non-perishable food items, and they are particularly looking for the following:

• Canned vegetables
• Evaporated milk/shelf-stable milk
• Canned pumpkin
• Canned fruit
• Juice
• Corn muffin mix
• Mashed potatoes
• Gravy

I am confident that the men and women who live, work, and play in Downtown Wilmington will do a lot to help provide for those in need in our community.
